A Quiet Sunday

This is the Labor Day Weekend.  So different than the Labor Day Weekends I spent as a kid.  On Labor Day we would visit with the Aunt’s and Uncle’s in Potter Valley.  We lived 250 miles from my Mom’s brothers so whenever she would get a three day weekend,  we would go for a visit.  To Mom a five hour drive was a long way.  But now that I am grown,  I think back to that drive,  and it really wasn’t so long.  When I was living in Los Angeles and I would go to Potter Valley to visit her,  it would take me almost 11 hours.  So to me a five hour drive isn’t that bad.  But we didn’t go all that often, only on holidays when Mom would have an extra day or two.   When we got to Potter, someone would always have a family get together with barbecue and plenty of food.  Mom never barbecued so it was always a special occasion for my brother and I.  We had lots of cousins, and my Uncle Al would always get attacked by all of us cousins and you would see him staggering around with kids hanging from his arms and legs.  He and Aunt Esther didn’t have any kids of their own but us cousins always thought he was the most fun, because he was such a good sport about letting us “pile on.”  Uncle Al passed on about 23 years ago,  but I still remember him fondly.
